A Lovely Day at the Cricket
On Wednesday 1st May, some of our Year 6 children journeyed to Somerset CCs County Ground in Taunton, to watch Western Storm take on South East Stars in a Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy match.
We arrived under leaden skies and mild drizzle to (unfortunately) a delayed start. However, our spirits were not dampened and the atmosphere bubbled like the finest champagne as Team PJS found their voice cheering on local favourites Niamh Holland and England’s Sophia Smale as they took to the field to try take advantage of the overcast bowling conditions. Sadly, the only thing raining were sixes from the bats of the SE Stars openers, who got their team off to a flyer! That said, each boundary and (occasional) wicket was met with enthusiasm and excited cheers from the visiting fans - mainly us. But don’t take my word for it, here’s what the children thought.
“I loved cheering for Holland, she’s an excellent bowler,” William H
“I really loved the throwing games! Lucas and I held the record on the corn hole game,” Archie R
“We loved getting our faces painted and playing games in the activity zone,” Isla G
“The SE Stars batted well but I think The Storm can chase it down. C'mon Holland!” Josh C
We left at the ‘tea’ interval with SE Stars having posted 298 for 5 in their 44 overs. (Scholfield 74, Davidson-Richards 65 and Cranstone 64*; Holland 2-59). As we left the ground, we were hopeful for a strong fightback from the Storm yet a little disappointed that we wouldn’t get to enjoy the run chase. Overall, a good time was had by all. Thanks to Miss Burke, Western Storm and Somerset Cricket for making the trip possible.
**update** It's a win for Western Storm by DLS method.
